I create my art either digitally or as an oil painting. So there are somethings to consider when deciding what works best for your desired piece.
1. Selecting the surface:
Digital portraits/illustrations are done entirely on my iPad and have the ability to be printed on different surfaces such as canvas, wood, metal, and various types of paper. Digital portraits also give the option of making multiples if you want more than one finished piece, say your giving it to more than one person or want it on different surfaces. Where as a painting you will receive the one finished oil painting( framing optional).
With an oil painting there is also several surface options. Canvas and canvas boards are slightly textured surface. Canvas doesn’t require framing, where the canvas board is flat and does require framing. Canvases come in various depths, most common are 3/4th inch to 1 inch. Gallery canvas can be deeper running 1 1/2 inches to 2 inches. Other surface options include gesso boards, cradled wood panels, and fine art papers.
2. Choose between a digital portrait or oil portrait.
3. Select a size. Sizes by inches include; 10x10, 11x14, 12x12, 14x14, 16x16, 16x20, 18x24, 20x24, 24x36, and up. Also something to consider when choosing a size is “Framing”, which will increase the overall size of the finished piece 2-4 inches on each side from adding possible matte board and the frame itself. I can assist in selecting a size by reviews photos provided and give you my recommendations on composition.
4. Email high resolution reference photos of the subjects you’d like painted. Please note that the higher the resolution/ crisper the photo, the better it translates to a beautiful portrait.
5. Select background. I tend to keep backgrounds simple to keep focus on subject(s). From a solid color, an atmospheric blend of colors, or a blurred suggestion of a landscape or various settings. The more complicated the background the more work for me which could lead to an increase in price.
